Crediton Parochial Church Council donates 5% of its income to charitable causes. The sum given during a full year will amount to approximately £5,000.
Eighty per cent of the amount allocated to charities is divided between four main ones, each of which receives twenty per cent of the total. The remaining twenty per cent is kept in reserve in order that the church can respond to major disaster appeals quickly. The four charities being supported in 2004 and 2005 are the Church Mission Society (cms-uk.org), the Church Army (www.churcharmy.org.uk ) , the Bible Society (www.biblesociety.org.uk ) , and Connect (www.connect-devon.com ) - the inter-denominational youth group operating in Devon schools. We have a direct link with two CMS missionaries, Heather and David Sharland, who work in the Sudan and who visit us when they are in the UK. Their latest report is given below.
Holy Cross, together with the other churches of the town, supports Christian Aid (www.christian-aid.org.uk ) during Christian Aid Week at other times of the year
The charities are also supported by fund-raising events, notably Lent Lunches, during the year and collections are taken at services when speakers from the charities visit the church. Such monies are in addition to the major donation described above.
